Studio Ghibli co-founder and former producer Toshio Suzuki said in a recent podcast that Hayao Miyazaki and he were at one point interested in adapting Hitoshi Iwaaki’s sci-fi horror manga Parasyte, reports ANN.
Suzuki commented that Parasyte’s themes are in line with Studio Ghibli's sensibilities and that Miyazaki was a fan of the manga.
However, plans for Studio Ghibli to adapt Parasyte never materialised because the rights belonged to New Line Cinema at the time, and so Miyazaki and Suzuki moved onto other projects.
When the rights eventually returned to Japan, Madhouse made an anime series and Genki Kawamura directed two live-action movies starring Shôta Sometani.
